No Purpose : No Design : Directed by Carl Jacks
Late in the fall of 2007, Chris Ryman (Endless Adventure) and myself, Carl Jacks (Dainty Deathy Productions, full-time nursing student) sat sifting through all of the random paddling footage we had begun to collect after a few seasons of tripping around our BC home front. With swollen eyes amidst a basement room full of thick smoke and beer farts, we eventually extracted enough material to build something of a paddling film - something that we hoped would be a little different...
Rather than studying for my term exams, I ended up spending most of my evenings assembling NPND. After nearly 2 weeks of 3am sign offs along with a few half-ass final exam marks, I had pretty much finished the film that Chris and I had each originally imagined. The end result would be a deeply intricate merging of dramatic instrumental music beneath a smattering of inspiring whitewater paddling visuals and well paced theme segments. In mock of our entire process, (and having been partially inspired by a catchy Meat Beat Manifesto track) I would title the film No Purpose : No Design.
In short, NPND is a 30-minute, BC paddling adventure show-casing an assortment of the West Kootenay region's finest whitewater destinations. Toss in a few twisted takes on some other classic BC surf destinations (Clearwater, Skooks, Tofino) and NPND noticeably stands out from the rest of the whitewater film genre by attempting to capture the many hidden tranquility's of this unique sport. The distinctive appeal that NPND portrays to the viewer came by way of using a non-professional, simple as heck, waterproof digital 'point-and-shoot' camera with a video mode that tends to simulate the warm, jittery soul of classic 8mm film. To further add to our lack of professionalism, much of the footage that we had captured on Chris's proper DV camera happened to be through a stuck zoom lens. How's that for working without a budget?
Featuring an assortment of talented West Kootenay paddlers, NPND is the first of many adventure films that we at Dainty Deathy Productions hope to bring you over the years to come.
